Charging was on hold due to iPhone temperature

I’m using a brand new iPhone 14 Pro Max and using it for only 2 Days.

The battery health is 100% and using an original 20W Apple charger to charge my phone.

And I get this message in the battery screen when I charge the phone

"Charging was on hold due to iPhone temperature".

My software is 16.4

Is this something to worry or normal, if it an issue, how can I resolve it?

Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for your reply and the info!

Further more, I closely followed the charging behavior of the phone and I found that, the phone is not getting too hot. I can say it rises a little amount hot of temperature as it charges but not to an state of overheat.

And the charging progress is never get paused. I never get a warning notification or message about an overheat, it continues to charge rapidly.

However as a protection measure I'm disconnecting the charger when it reaches 80%. (I'm maintaining the battery between 20-80%).

And I see that "Charging was on hold..." As soon as I disconnect the phone.

So, I'm not sure if it's a glitch or something serious to consider about.

And, does it help to maintain a good battery health if I follow that 20-80 pattern and/or is it recommend by Apple?

Or should I take the phone to Apple care for a warranty claim?

Thanks,

Nuwan

Hi nuwaus,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're having an issue with the temperature of your iPhone.

We're happy to assist.

We recommend checking out the section titled "If your device gets too warm" from the article here: If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

iOS and iPadOS devices have built-in protections to prevent overheating. If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, your device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature.

Avoid these conditions and activities because they might change the performance of your device:

* Leaving your device in a car on a hot day.
* Leaving your device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.
* Using certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game, or using augmented-reality apps.

If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, you might notice these changes:

* Charging, including wireless charging, slows or stops.
* The display dims or goes black.
* Cellular radios enter a low-power state. The signal might weaken during this time.
* The camera flash is temporarily disabled.
* Performance slows with graphics-intensive or augmented-reality apps or features.

Additionally, if you're navigating, your device might show this alert and turn off the display: "Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down." Navigation still provides audible turn-by-turn directions. When approaching a turn, the display will illuminate to guide you through the turn.

We recommend the link above because it directly addresses the issue you initially posted: you're receiving a message saying, "Charging was on hold due to iPhone temperature."

Please let us know the outcome after checking the information in the article above.

Cheers!
