Green Dot in Macos Ventura

There is a little green dot in the upper right corner of my display (in the menu bar). It's on the very right, not next to the control-center (or whatever it's called) icon.

My intuition is that this is an indicator that the camera is on. However, the physical camera led is off and the command line tricks that I have found for checking if a process is using the camera return nothing. What does the dot mean, and can I get rid of it

You said it is to the right not next to the Control Center. Is it to the right of the date?

On my Mac I get a blue dot next to the Control Center like this:

If I click on the Control Center I get this:

When I click on the System Services, it tells me that my location was recently checked.

I wonder if the green dot is related to a SMS message that was received.

That's something I've never seen before. Try the following so we can we can see what apps are running and what might be using that dot: download and run Etrecheck. Be sure to give it Full Disk access before running.

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can evaluate the report to see if we can determine the cause of the situation.
