Safari Browser running very slow

for a few weeks now, since the latest Mac OSVentura 13.2.1 upgrade, my Safari browser has been running very slowly on my 2022 purchased imac24 desktop (which is fine). I regularly clear history, remove cookies etc, but within a day or so, it is really slow again... I may have about ten tabs open at one time.... any ideas please ? I really don't want to return to a non Apple browser (ie Firefox)

Hi pmb1956,

To clarify, the sluggishness only started after the Ventura update? Did you make any other changes to the browser around the same time?

If the browser sluggishness is not resolved by clearing your history and cookies, check to see if there's any extensions installed.

"Manage your extensions

  1. In the Safari app  on your Mac, choose Safari > Preferences, then click Extensions.
  2. Do any of the following:
  • Turn an extension on or off: Select or deselect the extension’s checkbox.
    • Note: You get a warning if you turn on an extension that slows down browsing.
    • Change an extension’s settings: Select the extension, then select or deselect settings.
    • Remove an extension: Select the extension, then click Uninstall. Or, delete the app that contains the extension."

If you find extensions there, toggle them off one by one. If the sluggishness also stops, it's likely due to that specific extension.

Cheers!

Hi Derek, I wasn't having problems before Ventura, but can't be sure the OS upgrade is the cause, I don't think I have made other changes. I cleared all my extensions. It seems that after a few days, many tabs open more slowly until I clear all history empty cache etc.. capacity/storage is not an issue. I did have a third party Ad Remover product, this might have been a problem. I see Safari has its own AdBlock extension, would your recommend this ? or will it slow me down ?

Thanks for your suggestion

Please remove all Ad blocker products. You will experience slow downs and a host of other problems can arise. With Safari, just block Pop Up, clear all extensions, clear all Notifications and you should not have any problems.

While Apple does offer Extensions through the App Store for Safari, you still need to be cautious of the ones added. These Extensions are still made by other developers, not Apple, but their installation is more secure. Other Ad blocker products that use their own installer can and do install other system files that may cause problems.

I mentioned internet speed, because I thought the slowness was coming from sites loading slowly. After reading your follow ups, it seems that Safari is responding slowly, not necessarily from the internet speed. If you are curious about your internet speed, it can be check here: www.speedtest.net
