How do I stop my spreadsheet from floating on its own to the left when my cursor is stationary?

How do I freeze rows and columns in Numbers? This topic hasn’t come up in a while. I’m trying to freeze the first column in a Numbers document. I have checked “freeze header columns” but the column scrolls away just as it does when this selection is unchecked. Same thing with the header rows. Am I missing something? Does “header column” refer to my Column A or am I not understanding the terminology? Freezing rows and columns seems like a really basic thing to want to do; how could this not be a feature? That's unusual behavior. Have you tried restarting your Mac?
