Imac mid 2011 2,8ghz i7, 24gb Ram, GPU or RAM problem?

Are you able to add the original RAM that came with the iMac and run with just that?

Did you add the additional RAM? If you did where did you get it? The only vendors for RAM that most of us here would consider using are Crucial.com and OWC (MacSales.com). That's because the test their modules in the Macs they are designed for and will guarantee they will work.

That being said that model and year iMac had a problem with the AMD Radeon HD 6770M GPU. There was a recall on it which I was able to take advantage of. My GPU unit failed but didn't affect the boot, just stitches of different colored pixels across the screen. The new GPU lasted for a couple of years and gave out again. I had a rousing Irish wake for it.

If you can get the original Apple RAM installed and boot up to run but still get graphics issues then you can say the other RAM has failed and the GPU is beginning to also. But first get rid of the 3 beeps so you know you have good RAM.

You should have read the Terms of Use when signing up to participate in these forums before making comments like that. We are all end users like yourself who have volunteered to help others with problems. We are not Apple employees. The truth of the matter is that a 12 year old iMac is a dinosaur technology wise.

However, it it works for the Author then it's a gem, dinosaur or not.

You're welcome. There aren't many that can read panic reports short of Apple software engineers.

There's no mention of beeping with a bad GPU that I've seen. And it only requires one bad RAM module. You could try re-seating the modules.

edit: you could also try testing the modules two at a time.

As far as I know you need to test them as pairs. I have to say a 12 yr old Mac may not be worth messing with. For one thing it can't run anything later than High Sierra which is no longer supported.

People who work for apple will also try to convince you too buy a new computer. But if its just a ram issue don't let them convince you.

From what I've learned getting a GPU for that model will be difficult and probably cost more than the unit is worth. I hope it works out for you.
