Sleep/Waking Up on Mac OS Ventura

I am having a strange problem on my new iMac running Ventura 13.2.1 having to do with the SLEEP command.

I'm sure it is a toggle command I have not been able to find.

When I put the iMac to SLEEP, it goes to sleep correctly BUT within 15-20 minutes, it goes back up again. The idea is when I want it to SLEEP, it should sleep the entire night and in the morning I hit the space bar, and the Mac wakes up. That is not happening. I've had to shut it down so I can [myself] sleep thru the night without being awakened.

Can someone help me? Thanks

Yes. Why would I click on "Wake on Network Access" if what I want to do is have the iMac NOT wake up. I have that tab on OFF right now. I do not want the network to wake the computer up from 9:00 PM until 6:30 AM. Would it help? I do not have the timer set up.

Please advise.

I was not implying that you should have this checked. The name makes it clear you do not want to have it checked if you are concerned about you Mac waking up. I figured you had checked all the relevant settings in the Screen Saver menu and since this setting is in the Energy Saver setting, it is often overlooked.

On System Settings > FOCUS > and now OFF [Do Not Disturb]. The wording is confusing to me. If its now OFF, and anyone can "disturb" me, or need I turn it ON to imply Do Not Disturb Me. Some of these setting language is quite confusing, honestly.

Why do I need to SHARE ACROSS DEVICES ?? I don't want to share across any of my devices.

And I cannot "activate" the focus status if I do not give any app permission on all of my devices.

I am confused and I apologize to Mac Jim ID but I'm having a hard time trying to achieve what I have always had on all of my iMacs going back 15 years, which is simply: How do I set up this Ventura on my iMac so that when I click on SLEEP, it will SLEEP.... Period. Why do i need to shut it down. Either I am doing something wrong, and someone please help me out here, or there is something wrong with VENTURA, because I am not having any problems whatsoever with past OS ..... from LEOPARD to CATALINA.

Being a long time Mac user myself, I agree it added a layer of confusion when the idea of Focus State came around. If your Do Not Disturb is off, there are no restrictions. The Share Across Device is if you had an iPhone, the settings would be synced with it. The Focus State is if you want to let people know that you are on Do Not Disturb from apps like Messages.

As we all know this sleep behavior is not normal and agree a setting or possible app that is running in the background is the culprit. Hopefully the community can help you resolve this problem and can understand how frustrating it is when it seems to work fine for everyone else.

Are there any apps open when it goes to sleep?

Does it only happen when you use the Sleep command in the Apple menu?

Does the behavior change if you let it go to sleep after a set time?

You can run the EtreCheck app and post the report. This is a safe app and widely used by this community to diagnose system problems and there is no identifier information in the report.

Some other answers that may be useful:

Does it happen when booted in Safe Mode?

Any drives connected?

Any thing turned on in Apple Menu > System Settings > General > Sharing?

Listen for "Hey Sir"?

First and foremost... Thank you for the detailed explanation. I really appreciate it to try to solve this issue.

1- Any apps open when it goes to sleep? YES! I've always kept the MAIL app up and running, but with the DO NOT DISTURB after 10:00 PM that was never an issue. So do you believe that if I close the Mail app at night that would solve the issue? For that matter, I just simply shut down the computer, don't you think?

2 & 3- Does it only happen when I use the SLEEP command? That is a GOOD question. I will have to try both cases; leave it alone, or command it to SLEEP. Very good observation. To be truthful, quite often, if I am working at night, and I decide on going to sleep earlier than normal, I just click on the tab to SLEEP, and that's it. I will have to check it and let you know.

So I show on Energy Saver that everything is OFF. That is correct?

On the FOCUS tab, the DO NOT DISTURB is OFF and should activate at 10:00 PM

If that is OK with you, I will try one evening to activate SLEEP myself, and the next evening let the iMac do it automatically, and then report back to you.

I would definitely look into the Mail app and try quitting it just to see if it still wakes up. At least you could isolate the problem there. You would think the Wake on Network Access described earlier would stop that.

I also think that the Do Not Disturb only affects Notifications and Sounds when you receive mail, not necessarily the waking of the screen.

The only "sharing" I have clicked in green [ON] File Sharing, Printer sharing, and Media Sharing. They are all "old" settings that are active from way back. It is nothing new. The File & Media haring are for the AppleTV to show off our photos on the TV set when in "sleep" mode. The printer sharing is in case I want to print something from my iMac that is 2013 model which has all my music.

This issue began when we bought the "new" iMac 24" with OS Ventura.

Agreed.

I don't even know what "Safe Mode" is. Have never used it and do not even know how to access it.

No other drives connected to it. I only connect the external back-up drive when I want to do a new back-up.

One last thing to consider and I will let you test the scenarios. Look under Mail > Settings > General > Check for New Messages. Mine is on Automatic, but can be set after a certain amount of time. I wonder if it is set to a time, it will wake the Mac and automatic respects the sleep time.

The MAIL is set on Automatic, but again, this is nothing new. I always was with the belief that even if I did get mail "after hours", it would not wake the computer as I have the option set for "Do NOT wake for internet activity"
