See Use Home Sharing to share media from a computer to other devices - Apple Support. iTunes needs to be running with Home Sharing enabled. The Apple TV needs to be on the same network, with Wi-Fi set up to allow peer to peer traffic.

Dear Turning test

I did all of the steps you advised (several times) and still could not connect my iTunes library to the Apple TV. Eventually I had to reset the Apple TV to correct the problem. Thanks
