Ad and content blockers for iOS/iPadOS are not created equally. Some use natively supported system extensions - while others use a network proxy. The better content blockers use the OS native capabilities.

Avoid “free” ad-blocking Apps. Consider that App Developers don’t work for free; Apps have to be monetised somehow. So-called free ad-blockers are either monetised by advertisers paying to be white-listed (defeating the point of installing a content blocker), or your data and activity are being “mined” and sold.

One of the very best and most respected within the Apple App Store - designed for iPad, iPhone and Mac - is 1Blocker for Safari.

Beyond the trial mode (where you can use a single blocking category), 1Blocker requires a small subscription for full functionality. 1Blocker is highly configurable - and crucially does not rely upon an external proxy-service of dubious provenance, often utilised by so-called AntiVirus products intended for iOS/iPadOS. Instead, all processing takes place on your device - and contrary to expectations, Safari will run faster and more efficiently.

1Blocker generates a user-configured rule-set - and passes this to the OS for processing. The core 1Blocker App has no visibility of your traffic; all the processing is the responsibility of the OS, therefore preserving your privacy and security. Unwanted content is not simply filtered after download (a technique used by basic/inferior products), but instead undesirable embedded content is blocked before prior to download - improving both speed and efficiency of Safari.  1Blocker has also introduced its new “Firewall” functions - that are explicitly designed to block “trackers”. Being implemented at the network-layer, this additional protection works across all Apps. Further updates to 1Blocker have introduced additional network extensions, extending protection to other Apps.

1Blocker is also actively supported - receiving regular updates to its default blocking rulesets. In short, if you are looking for a content blocker specifically designed for your Apple devices, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. You get precisely what you pay for.
