Can’t make a purchase using apple balance

I can’t use my Apple balance to make an app purchase because it’s been telling me I have to add a payment method before I can do so

Add a method of Payment:

You need at least one Method of payment in there. So, start with adding one: If you need to change or update your Apple ID payment method - Apple Support
