iMac does not allow me to enter any password in login screen

I can get to the login screen and when I move the mouse arrow to the password box, it will change to an input icon. However, it does not allow me to enter any password. Any suggestions? Might my keyboard be defective?

If using a wireless keyboard, then connect the USB cable or use a wired USB keyboard in case the wireless keyboard is not working.
