iCloud Photos Sync Paused Due to Not Enough iPhone Storage

Hello,

I have recently upgraded my iCloud storage so that I can offload my photos digitally and save space on my phone. However, upon attempting to sync my photos on iCloud, I am getting an alert that it is paused due to not having enough iPhone storage. I don't understand why I need more space on my phone to upload photos to the cloud, my low phone storage is the whole reason I wanted to sync in the first place.

Is there any way to work around this without deleting anything?

Thank you in advance.

iPhone XR, iOS 16

No. You'll need to delete items from your phone. Your phone needs sufficient space to allow iCloud to work. You can elect to optimize photos (Settings > Photos) to keep low-resolution images on your device and the original image in iCloud. But, offloading images is not possible. If you delete an image on your phone that is synced to iCloud, it will also delete in iCloud and from any connected device.
