Using less than 20 watt adaptor to charge a late model iPhone?

if I use a less than 20 watt adaptor, does it still charge the iPhone though slow rather than fast and does it effect battery life?

Yes, your iPhone will still be charged. As you mention, charging will be significantly slower, but it will not harm your battery.
