SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

I'm getting two types of error messages on my MacBook M2 Pro, but I think they related. I can replicate the issue consistently by simply opening the latest version of the Docker Desktop client for Apple Silicon, on a newly reinstalled version of MacOS using the disk utility tool.

As soon as I open the docker client, the whole system freeze for a moment, and crash just afterwards. The error messages vary between two type. Sometimes, it consist of a single line (SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired))

And other times a full trace describing the kernel panic report.

Additionally, the same two types of errors seems to occur when I'm starting a simulator in Xcode, and trying to run my app. Im having a hard time seeing how they are related, but it seems like the same type of error that's happening.

I can find a few people are experiencing the same type of problem, which seems to be related to USB-A devices, or similar. In my case, I don't have any external devices connected. I haven't touched the hardware parts of the Macbook either.

When looking through error reports inside the `/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports`,

it seems to vary between to error types, but mostly reports similar to this format: "panic-full-2023-03-12-213106.0002".

I have uploaded the two types of errors as "additional text".

The full panic report (#2 error report) is around ~1,5mb so I can't upload the whole thing. So I stripped out what some of it.

SOCd stands for Sytem-On-a-Chip daemon.

Its report is likely the replacement for Intel x86 CATERR, CATastrophic ERRor detected.

Basically, it says there was some hardware trouble.

Watchdog Timers are set by software when there is potential for some task to 'wander off" and not service important conditions. When watchdog Timer expired, it means that is exactly what happened.

Most reports of this pair of conditions are cased by bad peripherals or bad Power to peripherals, external disk errors, too-old NFTS software Drivers, or problems with display interfaces.

Some have obtained relief by adding a Dock to stabilize supplied power, updating NTFS drivers to current version, erasing and restoring their external drive.

Some obtained relief through restore using Apple configurator, but this sometimes requires Genius Bar intervention.

If you cannot easily get control of this situation, It is serious enough that a consultation with official Apple support would be warranted. If the first responder can not provide a solution, they are backed by a group of very knowledgeable (but far less patient) Specialists in various areas.

Do not let them tell you it is fine if not SOLVED. Be polite and professional, and ASK for a specialist to contact you.

Thank you for an insightful post Grant Bennet-Alder - it is very appreciated.

The laptop is currently at an authorised service / repair provider. Apparently, they weren’t able

to identify any issues. After further discussions, they decided to keep the laptop and try to escalate it to a specialist.

Hoping they will get in contact with a patient one.

I’m unsure whether the person at the store tried to use the Apple configurator, but I will ask him next time.

For what it is worth. I have been using the laptop on daily basis for just over a month. There haven’t been any kind of storage-devices connected to the laptop (USB, external drive’s, sim-card, etc.) at any point in time, but I’m switching between my workplace setup and home-office setup often. This consist of a mix between dongles, USB-A to USB-C adapters, HDMI, and charging through MagSafe and USB-C. I haven’t experienced any abnormalities in that regard.

The MacBook haven’t been pushed by any amount of large workloads (compared to what it is capable of), but I noticed through the Activity Monitor, that when launching Xcode or Docker, the amount of memory usage was is increasing very fast right up until the crash moment. But I’m not using that many applications, so it’s probably an issue with a lot of other applications as well.

Here is an archive of a few panic reports if you curious.

Seems like the `panicString` vary between the following:

"SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)"

"panic(cpu 4 caller 0xfffffe0022926314): LLC dup tag multi-hit error by CPU 0”
