Apple TV 4K CEC Issue with Onkyo Receiver and TCL TV

I have a TCL55S405 Roku TV and an Onkyo TX-NR626 surround receiver. Those two devices have been working fine together for months using CEC/ARC - the Roku TV remote turns the receiver on/off and adjusts volume.

I have an ATV running tvOS 16.3.3(20K680) connected to an in on the TCL TV, the receiver is old enough that it doesn't support 4K HDR, so I don't want to go from the ATV through the receiver to the TV.

I can turn everything on with CEC using the ATV remote, however when I go to turn everything off, all three components shut off right away, but then the Onkyo receiver turns back on.

If I use the TCL Roku TV remote to turn everything off, it still works as it did before: the TV and receiver turn off and stay off.

I want to run everything just with the ATV remote, but I can't have the receiver popping back on at the end of the sequence.

Thanks in advance.

Good afternoon ericfromsan jose,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

If your Onkyo receiver doesn't work with your Apple TV 4K (3rd gen), then you may not be able to change the current setup that you have.

Hi bgmeek,

Thanks for taking the time to write up.

The ATV4K's setting was indeed on Settings > Remotes and Devices > [HOME THEATER CONTROL] Control TVs and Receivers = ON

The Onkyo receiver TX-NR626 is running latest firmware at 1091_5110_0000_0302

The TCL TV TCL55S405 is also running latest firmware at 11.5.0, Build 4312-30

The ATV remote still works perfect except that the Onkyo receiver turns back on right after being turned off

I wanted to share a quick update after getting in touch with Apple Support. They informed me that their process for addressing issues with non-functioning devices requires a ticket from Onkyo. However, given the age of my receiver, it's likely I will not pursue it.

While troubleshooting the problem, I actually discovered a workaround. Since my TCL TV is integrated into my Apple Home setup, I can simply turn off everything by turning off the TV in Home. Since CEC is linking the TV, this results in the desired outcome: both the ATV and receiver turn off along with the TV, and everything stays off.
