Change file sharing permissions on MAC HD using OS Ventura

I can't copy (write) any files from my desktop to my seagate external hard drives that are Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

I've reformatted both drives, but no luck. I was able to copy folders to the drives until I upgraded to Ventura, I think. The drives work on a separate computer, so it's not the drive or cable or a power issue.

I tried changing the permissions in my MAC HD. After Command I on the HD, I unlock the permissions. When I click on +/- icon under sharing and permissions to change the name or the permission, I get this message The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission.

The name is "system" in the sharing & permissions section. It should be something else, but when I click on the + icon to change the name, I get the same message in bold above. How do I change permissions? Anf if I do change permissions, will I be able to copy(write) folders ro my external hard drives?

My drives are both Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with permissions to read/write.

I tried the drives on another computer and they both worked fine. When I go into the system HD to change permissions by clicking on the +/- icon, I get this message: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission.

Under sharing and permissions it says: You can only read

NAME Privilege

system Read & Write

wheel Read Only

everyone Read Only

When I click on Action icon: apply to enclosed items, I get this message: Are you sure you want to apply the selected owner, group, and permissions to all the enclosed items?

Greetings sean6770,

Are you having any permissions issues saving data to the desktop for your Mac? What are you expecting to see, other than ‘system’, in Sharing & Permissions when looking at that information?

You mentioned having reformatted both of your hard drives. Have you attempted to format them to APFS and see if there is any change? File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac

Apple File System (APFS), the default file system for Mac computers using macOS 10.13 or later, features strong encryption, space sharing, snapshots, fast directory sizing, and improved file system fundamentals. While APFS is optimized for the Flash/SSD storage used in recent Mac computers, it can also be used with older systems with traditional hard disk drives (HDD) and external, direct-attached storage. macOS 10.13 or later supports APFS for both bootable and data volumes.

If not, and there is nothing else on one of your hard drives, let’s reformat to APFS and test. Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

1. If you have any files you want to save, copy them to another storage device.
2. Open the Disk Utility app on your Mac using one of the following methods, depending on the type of disk or volume you want to erase:
* If you want to erase your startup disk: Start up your computer in macOS Recovery, then choose Disk Utility in the Recovery app. To learn how to start up your computer in macOS Recovery, see Intro to macOS Recovery.
* Note: If you want to get your Mac ready to trade in, sell, or give away, and your computer is a Mac with Apple silicon or an Intel-based Mac with an Apple T2 Security Chip, use Erase Assistant.
* If you want to erase any other type of storage device: Double-click Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities folder.
3. Choose View > Show All Devices.
4. In the sidebar, select the storage device you want to erase, then click the Erase button.
5. Click the Scheme pop-up menu, then choose GUID Partition Map.
If the Scheme pop-up menu isn’t available, make sure you selected the storage device you want to erase—it’s at the top of the hierarchy.
6. Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose a file system format.
7. Enter a name.
8. (Optional) If available, click Security Options, use the slider to choose how many times to write over the erased data, then click OK.
Secure erase options are available only for some types of storage devices. If the Security Options button is not available, Disk Utility cannot perform a secure erase on the storage device.
9. Click Erase, then click Done.

Thanks.

Hey ,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

You might also need to change permissions settings for the disk, server, or folder where you want to move the item.

The steps below will show you were you need to change permissions to either "Read & Write" or "Read Only? For future reference, you can access the information above in this article: If you can’t move or copy an item on Mac.

Here's another article that explains where to go to change permissions to use files on a disk: If you don’t have permission to use files on a Mac disk

If it's still happens, tested in a different administrator user account. If there isn't another one, set up a test administrator account. This will help determine if the issue is related to settings/software in the current user account.

If you continue to have issues, we recommending contacting the manufacturers of those external hard drives to ensure software/firmware is compatible with macOS Ventura.

Take care.

Is the external drive a Time Machine backup drive? Or is it just a plain data drive?

Have you checked the "Ignore Ownership" option in the "Get Info" for the drive?

If you don’t have permission to use files on a Mac disk - Apple Support

Was macOS installed on the external drive? If so, then the root of the drive may be locked since it is no longer permitted to write to the root of any macOS 10.15+ boot drive.

Make sure the "Security & Privacy" System Settings allow access to the external drive. This is necessary with the updated security & privacy features which restrict access to devices and files/folders until explicit permission is granted.

Control access to files and folders on Mac - Apple Support

Are you using any anti-virus apps, or cleaning/optimizer apps, or third party security software? If so, then uninstall them by following the developer's instructions since these types of apps are not needed on a Mac and usually cause more problems than they solve. You can try booting into Safe Mode to see if this allows access to the external drive which prevents the automatic launching of third party software during boot & login, although a respected forum contributor mentioned this may not be as effective with changes in Ventura.

Has this drive ever worked properly with this Mac? Just want to confirm.

Where are the items located that you are attempting to transfer? Maybe those permissions issues refer to the source item.

I can save data to my desktop. I though I'd see my user name (Sean Costello) instead of "system" in sharing & permissions. I was able to write data to my externals HDs prior to OS Ventura. I'm pretty sure the problem started after I upgraded to Ventura. Is there something in Terminal I should do to solve the problem or maybe do a .DS_Stores files cleaning? When I try to write to the drives, I get an error-36 message. I've tried all the other fix suggestions for that error.
