mac upgrade to Big Sur

I am currently using a 27 inch, late 2013 mac. I am running Catalina 10.15.7. As I load different applications, some won't run because I'm not on Big Sur. When I use the System Preferences Software Update I am not given an option to upgrade to Big Sur.

I see it's available in the app store - if I download from there, will the upgrade be properly accomplished?

Upgrade to Big Sur Having difficulty upgrading from Catalina to Big Sur. I can't upgrade to Ventura due to age of my mac but wanted to go to Big Sur since Catalina is no longer supported. Software update just continues to spin while checking for updates and I just want to download the Big Sur OS. Any suggestions?

A 2013 iMac cannot be upgraded beyond Catalina. See the following from Identify your iMac model - Apple Support

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)

Model Identifier: iMac14,2

Part Number: ME086xx/A, ME088xx/A

Latest compatible operating system: macOS Catalina 10.15.7

You iMac cannot run any higher macOS than Catalina. Big Sur reaquires a 2014 model:
