If your Apple mobile device won't update, read this support article --> If your iPhone or iPad won't update - Apple Support

Another, less common reason for not being able to update is if you were using a beta version of software. Refer to How to uninstall iOS or iPadOS beta software - Apple Support

You do mean an iPhone, don't you? You say iOS but you post in a macOS forum.

You can update the iOS software on your iPhone by following these steps:

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi: Make sure that your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. You can also update your iOS software using your cellular data, but it may incur data charges.
  2. Backup your device: It's always a good idea to backup your iPhone before updating the iOS software. You can do this by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
  3. Check for updates: Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Your iPhone will automatically check for available updates. If a software update is available, you will see a notification.
  4. Download and install the update: If a software update is available, tap "Download and Install". Enter your passcode if prompted. The update will then start downloading. It may take a few minutes to several hours depending on your internet connection and the size of the update.
  5. Restart your device: Once the download is complete, your iPhone will restart automatically to complete the installation process. If it doesn't restart automatically, you can manually restart your device by holding down the Power button and sliding to power off.
  6. Restore from backup: After the update is installed, you can restore your device from the backup you made earlier. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Restore from Backup, then select the backup you want to restore from.

Note: It's important to keep your iPhone updated to the latest iOS software version to ensure it runs smoothly and securely.
