Apple Watch SE 1st Gen black screen, won't restart

My watch has become unresponsive. This is my second watch, my first was replaced under warranty when the crown stopped working. I've had this watch less than 6 months but it's no longer under warranty as they don't restart the warranty again if you receive a replacement.

Basically my watch face shows nothing, it does not respond (at least visually) to a hard reset of holding the crown and side button simultaneously. It will vibrate when the side button is pushed but nothing on the screen. I get alerts that it is fully charged etc, and it will pair and unpair from my phone at random times. I have voice over turned off and screen curtain is off as well.

I was in the water over the weekend (with waterlock turned on) and it's been acting funny since then....so I suspect water is the issue and it ruined my display. Is there anything that can be done? Apple want's $219 to send it in for service which is insane as the watch isn't even worth that anymore. This seems like a manufacturer defect to me, the watch is supposed to be able to operate in water (I never went more than 5 feet underwater), and I had the waterlock feature on.

Does there happen to be a known issue for this model having issues perhaps? I'm not going to pay $219 for a repair of this watch and it seems crazy that I've had 2 SE models in just over a year break through no fault of my own.

Any ideas?

First you need to remember the Water Lock function does not change the physical water resistance of your Apple Watch. A software setting can't change the physical condition of the water seals. All WL does is disable the screen's touch sensitivity so water splash can't cause unwanted operation of the watch. I would start by trying to make sure Water Lock has been turned off again - the current method on my Series 7 is to press and hold the Digital Crown for about 5-10 seconds, and you should hear some tones as it tries to blast water from the speaker. (If I remember correctly the original method was to turn the Crown several full turns). There is a slim chance this might also bring a reluctant screen back to life.

I also suggest putting the watch on charge and leaving it at least 1-2 hours, just to be sure you are not dealing with an unexpected low battery.

The other place I would look is the Watch app on your iPhone. This should give you a few clues whether the watch is alive, and maybe try forcing a new (different) default watch face. You could also look in the iPhone's Settings/Bluetooth entry to see if it appears as "Connected"

I wasn't sure how the water lock feature worked....thanks for the info.

It is functioning, I turned on voice control and it responds and talks and vibrates just nothing on the screen.

It's definitely acting erratically as it will fully charge and send the notification to my phone, and then at times will disconnect from bluetooth with my phone. Clearly water has gotten into it and it's flipping out.

***Ironically I started writing the above earlier this morning and got distracted with work and my watch came alive again....I restarted it and the screen has been on since then. I placed it in some rice and going to leave it there for a few hours and take it out and see how it goes.

Thanks again for the reply!

Rice as a drying agent is an urban legend and emergency method if nothing else is available. Think about it, your rice has been exposed to damp air and would have absorbed as much water as it wanted soon after the pack was opened (not very much unless it was boiling water).

For better drying suggest you try to get hold of some Silica Gel, either the prepackaged drying bags or simply a tub of crystals. You should be able to find it somewhere like Amazon or maybe even a local hardware supply. Reactivate by heating in your kitchen oven for an hour or two at about 240F/120C, often it has a moisture indicator which changes color. Silica gel will give you at least 10x better drying than even the best rice.

I actually opened this bag of rice, so at least it's brand new.....lol

I took it out of the rice this morning and it's worked fine all day through several workout sessions and a charging.....hopefully it stays that way!

I actually have some silica gel from packages that I've saved that I keep in sealed glass tupperware...if it acts up again I'll definitely use that.

Thanks again for the replies!

Well, that was short lived...put it on charge last night before bed and it decided not to respond again ......

It will still respond with voice control and when I try to hard reboot it , sometimes the Apple logo will come up but it doesn't return to normal operation.....

So this is basically the second SE within about 15 months that has broken and been irreparable.....not sure if I'll be getting another, $400 seems a pretty steep price to basically rent a watch for a year.....
