Sales tax on app purchase

I have never been charged sales tax on app purchases until this month (February 2023). Does anyone know why sales tax would have started all of sudden? If it has to with local or state sales tax, how is my location determined by the app store?

I looked back at receipts and it is a change of locality. The previous US state apparently did not charge sales tax. Once I changed my billing address within the app store payment information, the new state tax kicked in. Thanks everyone.

Have you changed addresses? Apple, I believe, goes by the country to which your ID is set and then the location provided by your set address within that country. The sudden appearance of charges may also depend upon changes to local laws. Many states have started charging "use" tax and even the city where I live has its own 0.5% sales tax added onto all the other sales taxes for the state and the county.
