AirDrop to iMac (2020 Intel/Ventura 13.2.1) not working since upgrading to Ventura

Since I upgraded my iMac (2020 Intel) to Ventura several weeks ago, AirDrop receiving on my iMac has stopped working. But I am still able to send files from my iMac via AirDrop. I have no problems sending/receiving via AirDrop on any of my other devices: iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 16.3.1), iPad Pro (12.9/3rd gen/iPadOS 16.3.1), MBP (15"/2017/macOS Big Sur 11.6.7). I'm afraid to upgrade my MBP to Ventura because of this AirDrop issue. I have rebooted all devices numerous times, and made sure each OS has been updated (except MBP), but that hasn't helped. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hello Dan Ringuette,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. We see you're unable to receive files using AirDrop on your Mac. We have a few steps that may help you resolve the issue.

Use AirDrop on your Mac - Apple Support

"Make sure that both devices are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

Choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder, then check the ”Allow me to be discovered by” setting in the AirDrop window. iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch have a similar setting. If set to receive from Contacts Only, both devices must be signed in to iCloud, and the email address or phone number associated with the sender's Apple ID must be in the Contacts app of the receiving device.

Install the latest software updates for your Mac and other devices.

Make sure that incoming connections aren't blocked in firewall settings:

  • macOS Ventura or later: Choose Apple menu  > System Settings. Click Network in the sidebar, then click Firewall on the right. Click the Options button, then make sure that “Block all incoming connections” is turned off."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hey there Dan Ringuette,

Sounds like you’re headed in the right direction. Safe mode can also help you to determine whether an issue is caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up. Testing there may be a helpful step as well. Here’s how to use safe mode:

  1. "Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

Take care.

Hey Dan Ringuette,

That is correct that AirDrop content sent to the Mac would appear in the Downloads folder. Because of the nature of how the progress seems to interrupt, it could be an issue with settings or software interfering on the Mac. We'd recommend setting up a new user account on the Mac for testing purposes, as this can help isolate if this is the cause of the issue. The steps to do this are under "add account" here: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support. If it doesn't happen in the test user account, it will let us know that issue could be caused by a third-party program or certain settings on the main user account.

Keep us updated.

Thanks so much for all the tips! I have double-checked everything from your suggestions (I have my iMac set to receive from everyone, and the Firewall is not on), but the problem still persists.

It's very strange because AirDrop seems to go through every step of the transfer process except the final one of actually transferring the file. When I initiate an AirDrop transfer from another device like my iPad, my iMac appears as an available receiving device, I tap it, there's a moment while the icon displays "waiting," then the transfer proceeds with the blue ring circling the iMac icon clockwise while displaying "sending," when it's done it displays "sent," then my iMac pings to indicate it has just received a file, and it brings the Finder to the front as the active window. But when I open the Downloads folder, it is empty! As I understand it, AirDrop only sends files to the Downloads folder, right? In any case, a Spotlight Search for the missing file turns up nothing.

All of my devices are running the latest, fully-updated versions of macOS/iOS/iPadOS, and all have been rebooted a few times in case it might clear up the problem, but it hasn't helped.

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion. I just created another "test" user account, and AirDrop DOES work for it. I was able to send a file from my iPad to the "test" account on my iMac. Interestingly, when I'm logged in with the "test" iMac account, and I select AirDrop on my iPad, there are two iMacs that appear, one with the icon associated with my Apple ID, and a gray & white one presumedly for the "test" account (for which I did not enter my Apple ID). It is the gray & white iMac icon which receives the files fine.

When I return to my main user account on the iMac, AirDrop still does not work normally. HOWEVER, when I select AirDrop from the Finder sidebar (or the Go menu), I now AM able to send files to my iMac from other devices. I don't know why this began working when I created the new "test" account, as it hadn't worked before. It's certainly not the most convenient way to use AirDrop, and it isn't the way it used to work, nor is it the way it works in the "test" account, but at least I can transfer files. Clearly, as you suggest, some third party software may be interfering with normal AirDrop transfers (i.e. transfers that work anytime, regardless of which app I'm currently using, and don't require me to open up AirDrop in the Finder), but going through the process of elimination to find the offending party is not going to be worth the time, especially as I've now got a workaround solution.

Thanks so much for your help!
