Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities funinthesun,

The following page offers steps that can be taken to isolate the behavior and determine the cause of the issue causing your Mac to restart unexpectedly: If your Mac restarted because of a problem

As mentioned there, start by discounting any attached peripheral devices first.

1: Shut down your Mac.
2: Disconnect all peripheral devices, such as hard drives or printers. If you have a desktop Mac, make sure that only a display, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad are connected.
3: Turn on your Mac.
4: Use your Mac for the amount of time that it would usually take for an unexpected restart to occur.
5: If an unexpected restart occurs, follow the steps to check the internal RAM and third-party hardware.
6: If an unexpected restart doesn't occur, turn off the Mac and connect one peripheral device at a time until an unexpected restart occurs.

If you need more help, providing additional information and context may increase the chances that you'll get a helpful response from the community. For example, did you restore a backup from another Mac, to your new one? Did you install any software since setting up your Mac?

Cheers!

As your Mac is very new, you would likely have Apple Care / Warranty.

If you want to check your coverage:

Thanks Mike. Nothing is connected to the computer when this happens. To be clear, it seems to happen when the computer is on sleep mode -- I open the screen again and it either restarts automatically or brings me to the options screen (where I'm forced to click "Macintosh HD" and then restart the computer).

I've already brought it in to an Apple certified retailer and they told me everything was fine. They told me they "reset and then install the operation system" and ran a diagnostic test and everything passed. From my end, I've also cleared the disc and reinstalled the operating system. Not sure what else I can do here or what could be causing this issue as it's a brand new computer (I bought it 2 months ago). Very frustrating.

There could be several reasons why your brand new MacBook M2 is randomly restarting and bringing you to the options screen. Here are a few possible causes:

1. Software issues: It's possible that your MacBook is experiencing software-related issues that are causing it to crash and restart. This could be due to a corrupted operating system or a malfunctioning app or driver. To fix software related issues; Check for pending updates, Boot Mac in safe mode, Reset PRAM/NVRAM/SMC, Repair Mac drive using Disk utility, Clean your disk or Reinstall MacOS.

2. Hardware issues: Another possibility is that there is a hardware issue with your MacBook. This could be due to a faulty component, such as a failing hard drive, bad RAM, or a malfunctioning power supply.

3. Overheating: If your MacBook is overheating, it could be causing it to shut down and restart. This could be due to a clogged or damaged cooling system, or it could be due to the MacBook being used in a hot environment.

4. Malware or viruses: It's possible that your MacBook has been infected with malware or a virus, which could be causing it to behave erratically.

Further, to diagnose and resolve the issue, I would recommend that you take your MacBook to an authorized service provider or an Apple store for further assistance. They will be able to run diagnostic tests and identify the root cause of the issue, and recommend the appropriate solution.
