mail content on my ipad is not downloading automatically

In Apple Mail client on iPad Pro. Mail headers download but Mail “content” is not downloading until I open the mail item and even then it just goes in to “loading” spin for quite some time +20s. InBox says that it has been “Updated”. This is all mail items not just some.

The mail is from my Gmail account. If I look at same email(s) on the Gmail app the message is fully downloaded.

I have tried re-starting the app.

Has been going on for quite some time including several re-boots.

OS is fully up to date.

Not sure where the problem lies or how to fix it. Ideally I would like my mail downloaded fully in the background.

This is on home wifi (hi speed) and also using 4g connection.

I can add further that mail on my iMac works fine ie downloads messages and content as expected. There is no difference in the accounts that are subscribed so I would rule out Gmail being the problem unless there is a specific difference in how Mail on OSX and Mail on IOS interacts with Gmail.

However under Mail settings Privacy Protection>Protect Mail Activity is on. Is this related?

This feature is another element of Apple’s “privacy” features that is intended to mask when - and how often - you access a received email message.

Unfortunately this feature, when active, automatically loads the email in the background - confirming to the sender that your email address is both “live” and monitored. This can be counterproductive in potentially attracting spam email.
