Frequent beach ball with iMac

Lately, I am getting the spinning wheel quite a bit with my desktop Mac. Sometimes, I am using an app, and then it will stop working when I want to save something.

How do I know what is going on and how to fix it when I get the spinning wheel? It isn't just for a second. Rather, it seems that whatever I am doing is unresponsive. I have forced quit apps, restarted the computer, and several other things, to no avail.

I have done that and hope that it helps. I found one app, Snap Camera, that was taking up quite a bit of space. When I tried to delete it, I got a "Cannot delete because the app is open" message. I finally figured out how to get it deleted, but when I did, something popped up wanting access to my computer. I did not allow access, but I search the message and found that it is either malware or a virus. I already have Malware Protection installed on my computer, but it did not find anything.
