Predictive text and emoji keyboard no longer available on floating keyboard

I just updated my iPad Air (3rd gen) to iOS 16.3.1. After the update, I discovered that the predictive text options at the top of the floating keyboard had disappeared, as well as the button to the left of the space bar that allowed me to access emoji. I do have predictive text turned on in settings, and it appears in the full-size keyboard, but not the floating keyboard.

I type almost exclusively with my Apple Pencil on the floating keyboard, and the predictive text is a huge and valuable time-saver. Losing that feature is extremely frustrating...I hope this is not an intentional or permanent "improvement."

Hey there JesseeJ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, since noticing that predictive text and the Emoji button was missing from the floating keyboard, have you tried restarting your iPad to see if that's able to help? If not, give that a try with the steps shown in this link here: Restart your iPad - Apple Support

How to restart an iPad with a Home button
1. Press and hold the top button until the power off slider appears.
2. Drag the slider, then wait for 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the top button until you see the Apple logo.

While restarting may seem like a simple step, it can sometimes help with resolving some unexpected issues like this.

If still having issues after restarting, have you noticed if the issue occurs in all apps, or when using the floating keyboard in particular apps?

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Take care!

Yes! It took a long conversation with a very helpful Apple Support person, but it turned out that the predictive text would come back if I instructed the iPad to forget the pencil and then rebooted. Unfortunately, if I re-pair the pencil, predictive text disappears again. The problem is evidently the firmware for the first-gen pencil. The issue might be corrected by charging the pencil using an adapter (which I still need to get) to charge it without plugging it into the iPad, then re-pairing it for at least 45 minutes to give the firmware a chance to update. For now, I'm just typing with my fingers on the floating keyboard, which is okay but not ideal.
