should I eject external hard drives while I upgrade to a new OS

I am upgrading to Monterey from Catalina. Should I eject all of my external SSD drives before I do the upgrade?

iMac Pro, macOS 10.15

Catalina came before Monterey and Ventura comes after Monterey.
