Distorted Apple TV Screensaver photos

I’ve had my screensaver set to show a shared album on my Apple TV for a few years. Yesterday, the photos stopped displaying correctly and now look like this. It is only the photos, and only when I’m screensaver mode. Other screensaver display properly, too.

Hi mightymike1000,

You mentioned that this behavior only occurs with the Shared Album you have set for your screensaver, and that others appear as expected without the distortion. This would indicate a likely software issue, so we'll want to ensure that your Apple TV is up to date. Update your Apple TV will walk you through updating manually.

"Update your Apple TV manually

  1. Go to Settings > System > Software Updates and select Update Software.
  2. If there's an update, select Download and Install.
  3. Wait for your Apple TV to download the update. Keep your Apple TV connected and plugged in to power until the update is complete.

After the update downloads, your Apple TV will restart, prepare the update, then install it. When the update is complete, your Apple TV will automatically restart again."

We look forward to hearing the results.

Regards.

Hello mightymike1000,

If you haven't yet, it might be best to start with the simple steps first and work your way to more complicated troubleshooting, if needed. Have you tried to restart the Apple TV and the TV since you noticed this issue? If not, we'd recommend trying that out now to see if that resolves this loading issue with the screensaver: How to turn off or restart your Apple TV - Apple Support

Restart your Apple TV

If your Apple TV isn't responding, restart it with your remote:

- With your Siri Remote (2nd generation or later) or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later)*: Hold down the Back  and TV/Control Center  buttons. Let go when the light on your device flashes.

- With your Siri Remote (1st generation) or Apple TV Remote (1st generation)*: Hold down the Menu and TV/Control Center  buttons. Let go when the light on your device flashes.

- With your Apple Remote (aluminum or white): Hold down the Menu and Down buttons. Let go when the light on your device flashes.

Sometimes it needs a good refresh of the system to solve these types of issues.

To learn more about the issue, is this happening with Home Sharing or Apple Photos screensavers? Which tvOS version are you using? If needed, you can use these steps to get up to date: Update your Apple TV - Apple Support

Hoping to hear back.

Cheers!

I have same issue on the latest version have used my photos as a screen saver for years. 2 Apple TVs only having problem on AppleTV HD generation 1 no issue on AppleTV 4k. This started with the last appleTV software update. Like poster have restarted changed photos to a different library and problem persists. However if I use Apple Photos like landscapes and flowers, I have no issue

Hi JosephLat,

I spent about 90 minutes in the phone with Apple Support (after about 30 minutes back and forth via text). Ultimately we restored the AppleTV to factory settings and started over, but that did not solve the issue. Ultimately this was determined to be a hardware issue and not solve-able and the recommended next step was to replace the device. Unfortunately, mine a few months out of warranty but I hope yours is not.

Thanks for sharing this info. I'll live with the issue since everything else works fine. I am very doubtful it's a hardware issue otherwise there would be other issues showing up. It's a software issue introduced in last update and may well be a. hardware compatibility issue since my Apple TV is and early HD MODEL WITH 32 GB I think purchased in 2016 or 17. I suspect apple no longer tests code against older models which may not be fully supported.
