Ipod Classic no longer able to edit playlists?

Is it true that no recent OS (like Big Sur) or similar era version of Music (the app, not the subscription service) will allow you to edit a playlist that is ON an iPod already?

Apple, if so, what was the point of disabling this feature? It's a huge P.I.T.A. for anyone who likes 24 bit music at home but has an iPod that only plays 16 bit. I can no longer simply delete the 24 bit files off the iPod? I must maintain duplicates of all playlists now or constantly create/delete playlists every time I want to change one song on a playlist on the iPod? This seems pointlessly stupid. Why was this feature disabled? Or am I missing something here?

Before you reply folks, please realize I am talking about files I own, not "Apple Music" the subscription/streaming service. I do not use the streaming service. I'm expressing annoyance here as to why it seems Apple has "updated" iTunes to a less functional music management system (at least for those of us who like owning music and paying artists).

PS. If you can only drag and drop playlists from Music onto an iPod classic but never view them, how do you delete them?

PPS. Anyone know of an iTunes version that will work in Big Sur? I don't care if it's "officially supported" or not. I'm asking if anyone's had any luck using that instead of having to scour the internet to try to figure out how to do something that used to take 2 seconds.

If this is as it seems...

This attitude from Apple of "use our latest stuff, by the way, we've crippled your old apple products via our "new and improved" software" is super #$%$%ing annoying. It's not cool to screw over customers who have spent thousands of dollars on your products.

BizBach -- And since you are (hopefully) switching to automatic syncing as tt2 suggests, pls avail yourself of the "shrink-n-sync" capability for iPods. You can keep lossless or hi-res versions in your desktop library and the sync process will automatically put a smaller version (AAC in 256, 192, or 128) version onto your iPod. No duplicates required.

This option can be enabled in the same window where you decide what to sync.
