iTunes Sync Never Finishes

Syncing my iPhone with Windows iTunes: The syncing never finishes.

It just says, Step 6 of 6 Waiting for changes to be applied.

The phone is unlocked and no longer showing the circle icon for syncing.

Authorized for Wi-Fi sync, but connected via USB/Lightning cable.

This started failing in the last month, and now fails 100% of syncs.

Any suggestions?

iTunes 12.12.6.1 on Windows 11, iPhone 12 Pro Max iOS 16.3

(iTunes is purposely not updated to the latest version. But it used to work.)

Thank you, Matthew.

No, Apple has ensured I can never update my iTunes software again, so that will not be the fix. (Future versions will remove the capability to synchronize calendar and contacts with my phone.)

My iPhone is up to date.

So, I'm looking for a resolution to the non-finishing sync that does not involve any further updates to iTunes. (I've had iTunes connected to my phone for 12 years (and to my iPod before that), and every version until a month ago or so finished syncing just fine.)

Thanks,

Bill

Hey there bills5,

Have you tried restarting your devices to see if that would help? Sometimes a simple step like that can resolve issues like the one you’re describing. You can read how to restart your iPhone here:

  1. "Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Hi there bills5,

Thank you for posting to Apple Support Communities. We're happy to help.

We do recommend that update both your iPhone and iTunes to the latest versions. Before updating your iPhone, we recommend backing up your iPhone first. These articles can be of help. When you back up, you can back up using a Mac or PC rather than iCloud if you choose.

That should help you sync your devices. Let us know if you have any questions.
