rubber edge screen protection getting brittle and sticky

This is about the last Intel macbook air, but sure it is happening across the lineup.

the rubber edge around the screen is sticky, dried out, brittle, leaves little pieces and spots everywhere. This is a known issue and Apple does not give a * and apparently even refuses to repair under warranty.

It is NOT cosmetic. The rubber prevents dust from entering behind the screen and serves as little shock absorber and anti-dust wall when the lid is closed. The issue also makes the lid very hard to even fold open (sticky you know?). Another decade old macbook air does not show this issue. Well well...

I have only seen this on a small number of our organization's thousands of Apple laptops. When I've encountered the issue I have noticed it is usually limited to a small section usually at the center by the camera, or the upper right top or side. This tells me that the rubber gasket is reacting to something on the user's hands, perhaps a hand lotion. A couple of times where more of the rubber gasket is affected, I believe it is due to someone using a cleaner on the laptop which has reacted with the gasket such as a Clorox wipe. Those laptops usually also had the anti-reflective coating rubbed off at that location as well and only where the rubber gasket was soft, sticky, or otherwise damaged which further confirms my suspicions of the source of the problem with the laptops I personally examined with rubber gasket issues.

On a couple of laptops I was able to "fix" the issue a bit so the rubber gasket was not as sticky, but on a couple other laptops it did not really help much. I am not going to provide any details because it is risky and could permanently damage the Display which would be worse than the gasket issue.

I have not seen a widespread problem with gasket issues with our organization's Apple laptops (I have seen other issues though).
