No sound / audio from iphone lightning port if not subscribed to apple music

I connect my iphone 14pro to my car via lightning / usb, and no sound is heard unless i have a subscription to apple music (i use spotify). Not even youtube, voice notes, instagram, nothing.

Before when itunes existed, i needed to have a downloaded song in order for this to work, but now, it requires me to have an apple music subscription, which i dont want.

i need to be able to play music through lightning port without having an apple subscription. please help

iPhone 14 Pro

Good afternoon Vicnicolas13,

You should be able to play any audio that is on your iPhone through your car stereo system using a Bluetooth or USB connection. You don't need CarPlay or an Apple Music subscription to do this. You may need to check with Spotify about their service. Are you able to play music that you have downloaded to your device from Spotify?

How to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your car

"Connect using USB playback

  1. Restart your device and your car.
  2. Make sure that your device is unlocked and on the Home screen.
  3. If possible, try to connect using another cable or USB port. Check the manual that came with your car to learn how to connect an Apple device.
  4. Check your charging port for any debris or damage. Make sure that your charging cable is properly inserted into the port.
  5. Update your device
  6. Make sure that your stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.
  7. Try playing audio from a different app. If you can't play audio from a third-party app, contact the app developer for help. If you can't play audio from an Apple app, contact Apple Support"

Hello Vicnicolas13,

Actually, your phone should be able to play downloaded music also. While other apps such at Safari etc. may not be compatible, if you have any purchased music, try downloading it, and testing if that plays.

Then we will know if it's an app issue, or iPhone, or connection issue.

Also, since this is a brand new phone and iOS version, you may need to try all the troubleshooting here, including checking for updates from the car manufacturer: How to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your car - Apple Support

I feel you are not even reading what i am writing.

  1. my car does not have car play
  2. i am not interested in apple music subscription, therefore, i cannot have downloaded songs (because you can only download songs in apple music when subscribed)
  3. right now i have iphone 14pro, but this was always an issue since my previous phone (XR)
  4. when itunes existed, you could have a downloaded song without apple music subscription, and this is how i managed.
  5. it seems the car via usb cable only recognizes audio when there is a song downloaded.
  6. no audio either from safari, spotify, youtube, games, etc.
  7. there is no problem with the cable
  8. it is not a problem exclusive to my phone, all my friends have the same issue
