Couple apps keep opining at start up even after I disabled them from the login items by going to:
System Settings -> General - > Login Items. then click the minus to remove them from the list.
now my login items is empty but, there is couple apps keep open at start up.
my Os is Ventura 13.2.1
Any advice?
It supposed to work in normal circumstances. I found out what was my problem hope it will work for you too.. when you go to shutdown option there is a box that been checked says to continue from where you left, that will open what ever you’ve been working on before shutdown . I deselect it and it worked..
Go to System Settings, General, Login Items. Select Messages (Under 'Open at Login') then hit the minus button below the list.
Which apps are doing this? Before rebooting, locate the app in the Dock. Do you see a dot underneath the app? This indicates that the app is still running and will open back at startup.
Type the following command and this will list the current login items.
defaults read loginwindow AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary
To remove a specific app, use the following command, replacing AppName with the name of the app:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to delete every login item whose name is "AppName"'
probebly youre find a little dot under thise apps in your dock. just clik on them with your right finger if you are using a mouse or with twe fingers if you using a laptop and clik quit .
i attempted to do this with Acrobat Reader and there seems to be no way to turn it off. i've spent an hour going through every menu and option in acrobat and it launches on restart every time even though i've attempted to disable it in every way possible.
That doesn't work because there are apps that don't even show up in that list, and they still open up every. single. time I start up my iMac. Half of these are apps I haven't used in months. The only time I see them is on startup (e.g. Microsoft PowerPoint). And there doesn't seem to be an option within the app to stop this happening.
I have the same issue, and none of these fixes work. Every time I restart my computer, it takes several minutes until I can use it, because a bunch of useless programs are opening on startup.
on a PC, it super easy to manage startup items, and I can get a PC to start right up.
why is there no simple solution for a Mac? My Mac is slow as molasses

It has been so frustrating, following all the steps recommended by Apple and STILL those annoying apps would launch on startup. I found the plist files in Library and deleted them - problem solved!!!! Kudos to you!

One of the apps that keep launch at the start up is the messages. I’ll check if there is something in the settings helps.

Alternatively you can quit running apps before you shut down.
I have the same issue, and did try all suggested solutions.
There are apps that open up that weren't being worked on when the computer was shut down. They're not in system preferences as 'open on start-up' and yet they do. Frustrating!
several apps [5] appear at startup on my Imac even after I removed them using [-] from General> log in item. I'm using Ventura OS?
