Apple music stole my own music

So I signed up for Apple Music and decided I didn't want or need to pay for another subscription. I have (had) almost a terabyte of music on my laptop that I personally physically uploaded from actual CDs. Now that I stopped Music subscription at least 40% of my personal music is gone: 40% of my playlists and 40% of all my music. I would search albums and see only numbers 2, 3, 6, 8 and 12 of the numbered songs there. I don't even know what's missing until I search it. Yes, yes, I have it saved on an external drive but I shouldn't have to plug it in and use it to find songs! They should just be there! I've lost my own music I created with my band even. I called Apple support and basically the guy, yes, this is a thing.

also when my old credit card did not pay for that month's Cloud it deleted files right off my Home Screen!!! When I paid it came back. Apple literally holds your stuff hostage. Next up? Apple will eliminate the E key and you will have to pay a subscription to use it.

If you're not subscribing to Apple Music I can't see how you'd expect the app to access your CD rips if the drive isn't connected and the files weren't imported to the local library. Since wider adoption of SSDs storage on the main startup drive has probably been too low for many of us to keep everything there.

Could it be that many of the tracks you'd ripped were 'matched' with cloud versions which is why they were available without the external drive connected as this feature would go after you stopped your subscription? Unsure if Music 'optimises' storage in any way if you're low on storage and deletes local files in favour of cloud versions (provided Apple Music sub active) as it can with Photos and various folders - something I personally don't trust for some reason.

Don't suppose you ever subscribed to the separate iTunes Match?

Thankfully you still have all the stuff on the external to reimport if you have enough space.
