Post PC Migration Assistant to iMac - Password not available for start up.

Migrated from old Windows 7 PC to new Ventura iMac. Was not aware of any PW on old Windows PC but Mac requires one (and named the new Mac with same name as old PC). Cannot open new Mac to complete setup process.

Have seen technique using Recovery Mode, but holding Command and R keys only returns to regular login screen with no chance to access utilities to reset password.

Any advice please? What are we missing? Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks much for your informative post. It lacked only one piece of info which I learned the hard way over some hours: with the new M1 iMacs, recovery mode is instigated not by holding the Command and R keys, but rather by holding in the backside power button until a menu appears! Once I got there it was easy to change the password, and later as you suggest, replace the admin account imported from the PC with a new one.

First, some information which may be useful. You must begin the process by setting up the Mac. During that process you will be asked to create a user ID and password. (Please don't be like a lot of people on this forum who forgot the password. Write it down somewhere secure.) Basically, the process is as follows. During the setup you will be asked if you wish to transfer files. Respond YES and follow the instructions you will be given.

·      You will be told to turn both computers on and activate Migration Assistant in the old computer. A PC version of Migration Assistant must be installed in the PC.

·      The computers should be connected with a USB cable to facilitate the transfer.  Wi-Fi is simply not suited for a transfer of so much data and corruption often results.  Do not use it. It can corrupt or lose data.

·      You will be given several options of what to transfer. You will likely want to transfer your settings and preferences.

·      You can transfer all or none of your files. You do not have an option to select certain files to transfer. If you wish to do that, then do so manually. You can transfer all or none of your installed apps. Some people elect to download fresh installations instead.

·      The old computer's operating system will not be transferred. No data from the old computer is erased.

·      Allow for up to an hour for the transfer process to complete once you start it.

·      It should set up the new computer the same as the old one.

·      When that is successful, you can log into the new Mac with the old User Account name and password and delete the brand-new user or leave it in place as a second admin account.

As to your question above, I suggest that you shut down the computer by pressing and holding the power key. Then during the restart process hold down the Shift + Option +Command + R keys on restart to access the Internet Recovery Mode. his should allow you to reinstall the computer's initial operating system, after which you can begin the initial setup process I mentioned above.

I hope this helps. Enjoy your new Mac.
