Autocorrection doesn’t work on iPhone 14 Pro

I notice for words containing an apostrophe like “can’t” the autocorrection does not recognize it. Instead it types it as “cant” and the correct one with apostrophe (can’t) shows up under the second suggested word instead of the first. Also I notice that occasionally auto capitalization for words like I does not work sometimes. I tried toggling on/off these two in the settings. The issue fixes for literally one minute before reverting back to being inconsistent/not working at all

Hi Brittany,

I noticed this happened a couple weeks ago. I don’t believe any changes were made to my device. I’m pretty sure this happens in most if not all apps. I actually see that autocorrection will sometimes work correctly as I type this response in Safari. I can see the predictive text options above my keyboard and autocorrection will automatically choose the grammatically correctly spelled word once I press Space to move onto the next word (this does not happen when I use the messages app to text my friends an it is sooooo frustrating to have to proofread my texts/paragraphs before I send now. I do notice however that in Safari that words with predictive text still won’t automatically correct to words with apostrophes like wont cant dont shouldnt, etc. I see the corrective predictive text for say “can’t” right next to what I type as “cant” but for some reason why I press space it doesn’t automatically switch to can’t and instead I’m left with cant. It’s so bizarre and frustrating!

I have no text replacements set up currently. I do have my English, Emoji, and Spanish language keyboards. I tried using the link to reconfigure my settings but I still face the same issues.

while texting predictive text works and I see the correct options but when I press Space autocorrection doesnt automatically switch to the correctly spelled word

Hey there TR7Ramen,

We'd like to continue ruling out some other possible causes, along with clearing up a few things about the details you recently shared:

  1. You mentioned this began two weeks ago, but do you recall what you were doing on your iPhone right before it started to occur? For example: adding a new app, changing a keyboard setting, etc.
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone
  3. Since you have a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 16.3.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.
  4. We also recommend making sure that all apps are up to date: How to manually update apps on your Apple device

Cheers!

Hello TR7Ramen,

To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we’d like to ask a few questions.

1. When did this first begin? Were any changes made to your device or settings before this started? If so, what was changed?

2. Does this happen when typing in all apps, or only certain ones?

3. Are any text replacements set up on your device?

The above details will help us plan how to proceed.

We know you mentioned reviewing the settings, but please check out this link to ensure the settings are correctly configured for Auto-Correction and predictive text currently, so we can make sure there's no issue there.

This link will help guide you through reviewing those settings: How to use Auto-Correction and predictive text on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Use Auto-Correction

Auto-Correction uses your keyboard dictionary to spellcheck words as you type, automatically correcting misspelled words for you. To use it, just type in a text field.

To make sure that Auto-Correction is turned on:

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap General > Keyboard.
3. Turn on Auto-Correction. By default, Auto-Correction is on.

Thanks!
