Unable to go back on iMessages

I am trying to go back through some messages on a particular conversation but the ability to keep scrolling stops when I get to September last year. I really need to get back to check up on some information and was wondering how to get around this.

I know it is possible as I’ve done it in the past

Hello Lauradig,

Just to clarify, is the issue that the Messages app stops responding when trying to scroll? Do you receive any error when the issue happens? If so, what does the error say? Does the issue happen with other apps, or does the entire device seem to stop responding?

The above information will help us determine how to proceed.

If your iPhone is running slowly, please check out this link, which has some information that may help with device performance: If your iPhone or iPad is running slow

Check your network conditions

Many apps require an internet connection for their content and other functionality. If the network that you're connected to is congested — for example, at an event with many people using the same network — apps might take a while to open or display their content. Your device can also seem slow as it repeatedly reconnects to new cell towers when you're in a moving vehicle.

Even if your device indicates a strong signal, you might need to wait, try again in a different location, or use available Wi-Fi. If you continue to experience issues with cellular data speed, availability, or performance in multiple locations, contact your carrier.

Hi Lauradig,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

If you have already checked that your device is running the latest iOS version in Settings > General > About and have restarted to address these behaviors, check in Settings > General > iPhone Storage to ensure you have available space on iPhone that could possible cause slowness. You mentioned this affects one thread. Does this occur if you try scrolling back further from a different device?

Regards.

Thanks for letting us know Lauradig,

If you go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages, what do you have set here?

Does it make a difference if you turn your iPhone to landscape mode and scroll through your messages?

If you're still unable to access previous messages, we'd ask that you reach out to Apple directly to investigate this further with you. You can find their contact details here: Contact Apple Support

Take care!

Not the message app itself. But one thread of message from a particular person. I can scroll up to a certain point of our messages up until September but then the small loading circle disappears and it won’t scroll any further. There is no error message at all. Just the inability to continue scroll. The device doesn’t stop working because I can easily scroll back down.

I have also tried doing this with and without wifi and also in different locations and the same problem occurs
