Hi, I used to go back to me and my friend's conversations within the message app but the other day just out of the blue all the old messages have disappeared. If anybody knows how to get back my old texts get back to me

The setting is set to Forever but I cannot see my older texts.
Moreover, I cannot access the Messages icon/app unless I open the Phone app, select Contacts and the info (i in a circle) button, and then select Messages from the ribbon at the top of the contact. Then I Cancel out and I can see all my Messages, or at least all mt recent messages. When I search for the Messages app, nothing shows. It's not hidden in a folder or anything.
What's worse, even though I back up my entire phone, my messages apparently don't backup because that's a separate setting.
The only reason I have an iPhone is to receive group texts from my family and friends bc of Apple's cultish proprietary messaging. Ridiculous.

Check to see if "Keep Messages" in Settings > Messages > Message History is set to Forever. If a specific timeframe was selected, that may explain why you're missing messages. For more details, review this article: Delete messages and attachments on iPhone.
