Not able to send documents in iMessage on MacBook Pro

I cannot send documents such as Excel or pdf in iMessage on my MacBook Pro. If I insert a document, such as a spreadsheet or small pdf file, I get a red error message saying "not delivered" no matter who the recipient is. This only started a few months ago. There is no problem at all with photos or videos sending in iMessage on Mac. I have all the latest updates and OS installed on my Mac, and no other issues.
