iPad 8th gen constant looses internet connection

This 8th gen iPad normally lies on my desk in standby. It's connected to our Netgear RBR50 Mesh Wifi.

After two days or so not using this iPad, I can see a strong wifi signal in the status bar, but in fact it's not connected to internet anymore.

Putting the device in airplane mode and back to normal, gives his internet connection back.

Sometimes the wifi symbol disappears, sometimes he drains his battery while not connected to the internet.

I've already reset his network settings. I'm on iPadOS16.3, but this problem persists since iPadOS15.

My ISP router (Telenet Belgium) also has wifi. When connected to that wifi signal, I haven't had the problem yet.

But, the Netgear also provides wifi to an iMac, two Macbooks, several iPhones and an iPad Air 2 and iPad gen 7. All that devices seems to work properly.

What could be the reason with this iPad Gen8...

tnx

Gert

Hello GertWouters6,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with connecting to Wi-Fi on your iPad. Try the steps here to see if they resolve the issue: If your iPhone or iPad won't connect to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support

Have you tried restarting your iPad? This simple step resolves a multitude of issues: Restart your iPad - Apple Support

"How to restart an iPad without a Home button

  1. Press and hold either volume button and the top button until the power off slider appears.

  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the top button until you see the Apple logo.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, does your iPad need updating to iOS 16.3.1? Do you have a recent backup for the data in your iPad in iCloud or your computer? If not, we recommend that you create one as described here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Then update your iPadOS as outlined here:  Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

In exploring possible causes, these support page may be helpful with initial troubleshooting of WiFi connection difficulties:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support

Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support

If your WiFi has been set-up according to Apple’s recommended settings, WiFi and Internet connection difficulties are usually an indication that your device does not have a routable IP Address - your IP Address usually being assigned by DHCP. When this occurs, your iPad may only have a self-assigned link-local IP address that begins 169.254.x.x.

System software updates can, in some circumstances, trigger a problem with the iPad (or iPhone) internal routing table. The causes are many, but are usually attributable to some types of App or associated device configuration.

If you have a VPN App or profiles installed, or a security App such as Norton, these may be interfering with DHCP - and preventing your device from reliably obtaining a valid IP Address for the WiFi network to which you are attempting to connect. The resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may only need to temporarily disable or remove the Security App and/or VPN.

If you continue to have difficulties and your iPad is running iPadOS, check to see if your iPad is using the new WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can cause issues if specific MAC addresses are expected by your WiFi Router. You may need to disable this feature - and can be enabled or disabled for each individual network.

Use private Wi-Fi addresses in iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and watchOS 7 - Apple Support

DHCP is frequently used to automatically obtain an IP Address. Until your iPad has a valid IP Address to connect to your network, you will not have an internet connection. Disabling or removing VPN and/or the offending security App should allow DHCP to operate normally - allowing connection to your network and the internet.

If this resolves your issue, the VPN and/or security App can be reinstated after the connectivity problem has been resolved.

On the iPad I don't have any VPN services anymore. Removed it last year, for trying to solve this issue and I just need this on my Mac.

The Private Address feature was enabled. 99% of the time, I use this iPad at home. So it can be safely disabled.

I'll try this before changing settings on my router. This option is the last one, because everything else connected to the mesh router works fine...

I'll report back after the tests...

In the mean time, I did several tests, but it is something very strange.

I tried everything suggested here. Switching off Private networking doesn't solve the problem.

I even set the iPad to factory settings, I used my second iCloud were almost nothing is installed (my main iCloud has an HomeKit configuration etc), but the problem remains.

One thing: if connected the the wifi of my ISP modem, the problem is gone.

Reinstalled the Netgear mesh with factory settings, installed the newest software, reset the Netgear as a Router instead of an access point, but no solution.

Now the Netgear is installed like it was when the iPad was new in 2020.

I made every setting as Apple suggests, but also no solution...

Anything else I could try?
