M2 iPad Pro connected to Wi-Fi with max signal strength but keep dropping internet connection.

I bought an M2 iPad Pro 11” model late last year, and in recent months it started to develop a persistent issue that even though it was connected to Wi-Fi with maximum signal strength as indicated at the upper right corner, it kept dropping internet connection! It happened sporadically but getting more and more frequent especially in the last couple of weeks. The internet connection could drop abruptly and got into perpetual loading, sometimes during video streaming such as YouTube or Netflix, it could also happened during web surfing. There is no specific Apps that the problem affected, all Apps required internet connection could experience the issues sporadically. The iPad has been updated to the latest iPadOS 16.5 but issue remains. When the issue occurred on the M2 iPad Pro, all other devices in my household connected to the same router worked smoothly (including Android TVs, Android phones, Windows laptops, and even the old iPad Pro 10.5”). This clearly showed the issue is not router related. I have tried everything I could find on the internet to no avail, including rebooting the iPad, reset the router, forget the network, reset the network setting, manually specify the IP address and DNS. I complained to Apple Support, and the suggestion was that this could be just the specific hardware problem and proceeded to replace the iPad. Unfortunately the replacement M2 iPad Pro continued to show exactly the same internet connection problem. This clearly showed M2 iPad Pro is likely problematic and caused the internet connection stability issue. I still do not see Apple acknowledge the problem and offers a solution. What can we do in this regard to fix the problem? Thanks.

Go to Wi-Fi settings>details of that connected network>turn “off” Wi-Fi 6E Mode

When I bought a new M2 iPad Pro I did notice that the Wi-Fi for kept losing internet connection. It also had cell service so I’d switch to cell data when Wi-Fi wasn’t working. It was when I got a new M2 Max MacBook Pro that got my attention because the Wi-Fi would turn off on that device too. I got frustrated because all my other devices had no problem connecting to the internet. Even my old intel MacBook Pro had no issues. My partner has a M1 MacBook Pro and he can use his laptop where ever he pleases without any Wi-Fi issues. I was struggling to stay online for work zoom calls and trouble transferring files through Dropbox…

Today, while I was in the Wi-Fi research rabbit hole, I realized that both of my M2 devices (iPad and MacBook) has “Wi-Fi 6E” then I connected the dots that my router does not have that capability. As I was clicking around I found the option of turning off the Wi-Fi 6E mode. When I did that, I noticed that I no longer have internet speed issues. Hope this helps.

Make sure you are using a 5Ghz Wifi connection. The 2.4Ghz band is no longer useful with todays multiple device environment. If it is a dual band router, the iPad may be connecting with 2.4Ghz, which is plagued by interference and causes dropped connections. If you have not done this already, I would create a 5Ghz only wifi network on your router and switch off the Auto-Join setting on your current network, then connect your iPad to the 5Ghz network.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I am using a Linksys E9450 Wi-Fi 6 router, it has a single SSID for both 2.4Ghz/5Ghz band. For some reasons, it kept rejecting my credentials logging into the router, so looks like I will be forced to reset the router which I am very reluctant to do given the initial pain of setting it up. So I am looking into getting a Wi-Fi extender and set up a 5Ghz band SSID with it instead.

I did a bit more search and found that this issue seems to be related to M2 processor devices, including Mac Book Pro and Mac Mini coming with the chipset. Some suggested turning off ADWL, some claimed 2.4Ghz band work best while some got better connection with 5Ghz band network only. This issue seems quite prolific and complaint started many months ago since last year. Apple still does not offer any solution, or even officially acknowledge it. Is there any understanding why M2 processor is so prone to such issue, or susceptible to the network condition? Is this a software or a hardware flaw? Thanks.

I have the same issue as my iPad Pro M2 (Wifi + Cellular) has issue with 5Ghz wifi as it shows as either “No internet connection” or you can’t run anything using internet. The iPad works fine with 2.4Ghz wifi and cellular 5G. My other Apple devices are running fine with 5Ghz wifi.

I went to Apple Store for replacement, 2 times, and it still has the same issue. The apple sales guy said we have to wait until there is a software update although they did not acknowledge that this is common issue. Hence, the only option is go for a refund or wait until Apple fix the bug.

I am still holding my iPad at the moment, and see if there is any update.
