HomeKit requires a home hub and a home network. It does not depend on a special router or home network setup per se.

There are some differences for model Apple TV box:

- Apple TV (1st or 2nd generation, 2007–2010) never had any HomeKit functionality.

- Apple TV (3rd generation, 2012–2013) had limited HomeKit functionality initially, but is deprecated now.

- Apple TV HD (4th generation, 2015) is HomeKit compatible (through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth).

- Apple TV 4K (1st generation, 2017) is HomeKit compatible.

- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation, 2021) is HomeKit compatible, and also supports Thread networking for HomeKit compatible accessories that may use that.

- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022) Wi-Fi is HomeKit compatible.

- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022) Ethernet+Wi-Fi is HomeKit compatible, and also supports Thread networking for HomeKit and Matter compatible accessories (Thread border router).

Thread networking is a hardware property for wireless mesh connectivity different than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Matter is a software property (iOS/iPadOS/tvOS 16.1 or later), and the new home automation standard going forward, that doesn’t require anything HomeKit specific from manufacturers (more devices supported!).
