My battery is showing service recommended, so I have booked an appointment with the genius bar at Stratford city. Will they replace it there, or will it need to be sent off to be replaced?

that would depend on where on earth you are located, and where you take it. but I have noticed that it tends to be roughly $199 USD, parts and labour.

That depends on the capabilities of the Apple Store, the age of the MacBook, the availability of the required parts (again, based on the MacBook's age), etc. Generally, based on my own experiences, the batteries for newer iPhones are replaced in-store, however, I can't speak for MacBooks. We are fellow Apple users here, just as you are. If you need to know that particular information, it's best to contact that particular Apple Store...I'm sure they will be able to tell you when you take your MacBook in.
