External SSD unstable, really really slow

Hello. I got the Mac mini m2 pro a couple of weeks ago and it’s awesome. I’ve come from windows.

I bought a 2tb nvme m2 ssd and an orico enclosure.

ssd:

Solidigm™ P41 Plus Series 2TB PCIe GEN 4 NVMe 4.0 x4 M.2 2280 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (2TB, M.2 80mm, PCIe 4.0 x4) https://amzn.eu/d/0JwHfYq

enclosure:

When I plug it in and initialise it to APFS, it would hang everything in the system. Sometimes crashing finder. When I try to transfer something, it takes forever to start. Also ages for the drive to show up.

I then ordered a decent enclosure and reformatted it to exfat.

It’s slightly better, but still extremely slow. I’m getting maybe 8mbs write and even slower read speeds.

have I done something wrong? Does anyone have any idea? Everything is brand new.

Hello. I ordered another ssd from crucial. It works perfectly.

The other ssd ran extremely slowly even on a windows laptop. And couldn’t be read by the manufacturers own diagnostic software.

so I’m now doing a return with Amazon for the faulty drive.

Since you mentioned that the SSD is causing the Mac to run slowly, you may want to make sure that it was set up to work correctly with your Mac. You can learn more about the settings that are needed here: Connect and use other storage devices with Mac - Apple Support.

Thank you. I’ve used Apple support via phone call too and I’m impressed with them. I’m not regretting buying my m2 pro mini at all ;)
