My deleted mail comes back to inbox

Mail app, MacOS 12.4. It’s just one account now that this happens in, but I delete my mail and it comes back to the inbox. The advanced settings are the same for the gmail, iCloud, and other yahoo mail accounts. I’ve discarded all the rules I have set up. I’ve made sure the iPhone is set to Deleted, not Archive. I’m trying to get around these issues in the webmail source preceding the mail app, but I can’t get rid of the stuff in the box. 2431 messages. I got a handful to go away by quickly Quitting Mail after setting the “delete when quitting mail “ to on.

being my oldest account and mail archive, starting over isn’t my best option. But I’ve had to do that while bellsouth/att/yahoo work out their bugs. It’s set up as IMAP. Ideas? Thank you kindly!

Hi Frances-NC,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. You've taken some great troubleshooting steps so far. You mentioned webmail. Does the same thing happens when you access your email provider's webmail page? That will isolate this further.

You mentioned macOS and iPhone. Does this happen on both iPhone and Mac or where exactly?

In addition to the steps you've tried, perhaps permanently deleting emails will help. Try the following as mentioned in Delete emails in Mail on Mac - Apple Support.

"Permanently delete emails

In the Mail app on your Mac, do one of the following:

Choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items, then choose an account.
In the Mail sidebar, Control-click a Trash mailbox, then choose Erase Deleted Items.

You can set the “Erase deleted messages” option in Mail settings to have Mail permanently erase deleted messages for you at a specified time. See Change Mailbox Behaviors settings."
