How to fix the position of app and group icons within a home page?

I found a “How do I stop the home screen icons 'floating'” Q&A but the answer did not seem to work on iOS 16.1.1 (and a thanks post was wrongly marked as the best answer).

Eventually, I realised that the OP was thinking of a different issue.

My issue is that, while I can move app or group icons between home pages, I can not find a way to fix their position within a page (as I can do on an Android phone and wrongly thought that I could do on an iPhone).

Further searching on the Internet suggests that this may be a consequence of an (undesirable) decision by Apple.

Any suggestions on how to overcome this other than having a small number of groups with many icons in each?

Thanks Villas_s.

From my experience on both iPhone and iPad, when Apple suggests “Another location on the same page”, they really mean “Another position in the order on the same page” because all icons get squashed to the top rows of the screen!

It appears to be impossible to, for example, place one icon in each corner.

Move apps and widgets on the Home Screen on iPhone - Apple Support

Move apps and widgets around on your iPhone
1.) Touch and hold any app or widget on the Home Screen, then tap Edit Home Screen.
-The apps begin to jiggle.
2.) Drag an app to one of the following locations:
-Another location on the same page
-Another Home Screen page
-Drag the app or widget to the right edge of the screen. You might need to wait a second for the new page to appear. The dots above the Dock show how many pages you have and which one you’re viewing.
Jiggling apps on the Home Screen with an arrow showing one app being dragged to the next page.
3.) When you’re finished, press the Home button (on an iPhone with a Home button) or tap Done (on other iPhone models).

Just in case, this resource has more details as well: Organize the Home Screen and App Library on your iPhone - Apple Support
