Using Homepod Without purchasing Apple Music

I am asking the question to answer it myself (The related question was outdated and I could not answer it: "I have a large library of music in iTunes, most of which was purchased on the iTunes store. I do not have Apple Music. I want to set up a HomePod in my basement and be able listen to my playlists without a lot of hassle. I don't want to have to go upstairs to a device in order to connect. Can I "Hey Siri" my playlist without doing anything else? If I can't do that, it seems that HomePod may not be the solution for me.")

It seems to work if you:

Create a playlist
Add songs to it from your collection.
Tell Siri, "Hey Siri, play my playlist [your playlist name]." (Make sure you say my playlist not playlist.)

Another angle for one song in your library:

"Hey Siri, play the song [name of your song]." HomePod may give a verbal error but then play it.

Siri on HomePod is able to play songs from your unhidden purchase history with the iTunes Store. It should not be able to play playlists on demand or other music from your library unless you have iCloud Music Library as part of Apple Music or iTunes Match. Perhaps you've inadvertently activated a free trial to Apple Music? You can AirPlay from your iPhone as an alternative to going to your computer.
