MBP M1 Pro constantly drops WiFi connection and can't connect to iPhone for internet sharing

Hi,

I use my MacBook Pro 16 for work and am constantly dropping internet connection with it, despite being continuously connected to the WiFi. It is frankly embarrassing to use a 3000$ Apple machine for work and keep getting disconnected from video calls as well as having my daily workflow interrupted. Since the WiFi connection of the Macbook is unreliable I tried to connect to the internet via my iPhone, but it also doesn't connect to my iPhone. Embarrassing that stuff doesn't even work in the closed Apple ecosystem!

  1. I have tried all the solutions in this forum but nothing worked (resetting wifi, renewing DHCP lease, turning off Airdrop, ...).
  2. No other computer that is connected to the same wifi at work has any issues
  3. I have this issue when connecting to my home network as well.

Is there anything else that can be done?

Best.

MacBook Pro 16″, 13.1

Hi Schnecks,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you've tried some great isolation steps so far. Next, we'd recommend using the guidance from If your Mac isn't connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi - Apple Support which may help further. For instance, disable VPN and security software if you use those. The diagnostics tools mentioned in the following section of that article may help isolate this as well.

Use the built-in diagnostic tools
Wi-Fi Recommendations. Click Wi-Fi  in Control Center or the menu bar and check for a menu item named Wi-Fi Recommendations. If you see it, your Mac has detected an issue and has recommendations. Choose Wi-Fi Recommendations to learn more.*
Wireless Diagnostics. Press and hold the Option key on your keyboard while clicking Wi-Fi  in Control Center or the menu bar, then choose Open Wireless Diagnostics from the menu. Learn more about using Wireless Diagnostics to analyze your wireless environment.

All the best.

Hi and thanks for the reply!

As for the guide:

  • restarting only helps for a couple of minutes or even seconds and is not really a solution to the issue unfortunately
  • It is on the latest version of MacOS
  • No VPN running or even setup
  • No security software
  • Nobody else (including several Intel Macs) has this issue
  • I will give the diagnostics a try the next time the problem occurs.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'll try restarting into safe mode the next time I experience this issue. It is hard to replicate as it occurs sporadically. However, everything I have added is professional software from certified developers that can be installed without giving special permissions in the MacOS settings (e.g. onedrive, asana, office, adobe). No apps that have anything to do with network connectivity (like a VPN, firewall, etc.)

Thanks!
