After 16.2 update calling from "recent calls" is done by facetime audio

My phone updated to 16.2 last night (wish I hadn't done that). This morning I missed a call and tried to call back from the "recent calls" list. The call went out via facetime audio and added another person. This has happened several times today with other calls made to different people (facetime always adds a second person) and it is always when calling from the "recent" list.

Hello sandrafrommt. vernon,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

We understand when you place FaceTime calls from your recent call list that another call is added. We are happy to help.

What is the exact error message you receive? What happens if you don’t start the call from the recent call list?

Please use the steps here to close the app: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

"How to close an app

You should close an app only if it’s unresponsive. The way you close an app depends on the type of device that you have. Find your iPhone or iPod touch model below, then follow the steps. Or learn how to close an app on your iPad.

  2. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.
  3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app."

Once the app has closed, please restart the iPhone using the steps here: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later

  1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Once your iPhone has fully restarted, please use the steps here to start a FaceTime call: Use FaceTime with your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

"Make a FaceTime call

To make a FaceTime call, you need the person's phone number or registered email address. There are a few ways to make a FaceTime call:

  • In the FaceTime app, tap New FaceTime and type the person's phone number or email address. Tap the number or address, then tap the Audio button  or   FaceTime.
  • If you have the person's phone number or email address saved in your Contacts,3 you can start typing their name and tap the name when it appears. Then tap the Audio button  or  FaceTime.
  • You can also start a FaceTime video call from your iPhone during a phone call. Tap the FaceTime icon in the Phone app to switch to FaceTime."

Thank you for your suggestions. However, I was not trying to place a FaceTime call (nor did I want to). I was placing mobile/cell calls from my "recents" call list.

My FaceTime App was not open and I was not trying to use it. At no point did I receive an "error" message.

When placing a regular, normal, routine cell phone call, I would select a single person from my "recents" list (the call selected had previously been a regular, normal, routine cell phone call (I was not selecting a previous FaceTime call).

The iphone 13/IOS 16.2 chose to make the call via "FaceTime Audio" and would randomly add an additional person to the FaceTime call. I disconnected the call when I saw that my phone was sending out a FaceTime Audio call to two people.

In an effort to fix the problem, I deleted the multiple-person calls from "recents" and turned off my phone. The multiple person, FaceTime call problem continued.

I then turned off FaceTime through "settings" and turned off "wireless calling." This helped to some degree as my phone stopped placing FT audio calls. However, in the "recents" call log, it would sometimes still appear that a phone call had been made to two random people (vs the single person that I had spoken with). It appeared to be a multiple-person call coming in to the person receiving my call.

In addition, the call log would indicate that I received a group call (my son and my doctor) even though I had only spoken with one person.

There was never any rhyme, reason, or connection of the pairing of people. They did not have to have previously received a FaceTime call from me, be adjacent in the call log, nor have had a very recent conversation/call. Though it looks like the pairings of people had all previously received calls from me (vs. being the caller to me).

Yesterday evening I deleted all calls from my "recents" and shut down the phone (suggested by someone on a similar thread).

For now, this seems to have worked. However, it appears that FaceTime is active upon restart (so I have once again turned that puppy off through settings).

Hopefully, this will be a long-term fix until the issue is resolved through a software update.

Experienced the same outcome; iPhone 13, 16.2 update - corrupted "Recents" to record random numbers that were not on calls as having participated in a given call. Entire recent menu was unusable to use for simple voice call back. Whatever Face Time has been configured to do in this update - please reverse it back to a simple untouched/accurate "Recents" menu. Thanks
