The official "I can't connect my Garmin to my new M1 MacBook Pro/Air" thread.

So many people and I mean SO MANY people are having issues connecting their Garmin devices (whether it be a GPS or something else) to their new M1 Macs to get it to actually go into Mass Storage Mode (aka for the computer to recognize it as a hard drive of sorts), and they will plug it into their computers and it'll just charge it and that's it. I have a Nüvi 50LM. I am also in said category of folks.

If you:

Have the latest version of Garmin Express

Are running Monterey on your M1 machine

Have tried using the official Garmin USB to Mini-USB cable with Apple's official USB to USB-C adapter (as Garmin actually recommends you use on their website?!?)

Have tried a multitude of direct USB-C to Mini-USB cables that all do data for other devices of yours that have Mini-USB but for some reason not for your Garmin,

Are unable to check off the "read data on removable volumes!" checkbox because your M1 Mac won't recognize the Garmin in any capacity as its plugged in in the first place...

and nothing is working?

Then this thread is for you. I wanted to make this so we'd have a current space to discuss our issues and see if we come up with any potential solutions, or if Garmin does eventually, or what happens.

The interesting thing is that Garmin themselves contradict themselves on their website. They say in one sentence "Don't connect your Garmin with a USB adapter or hub, it won't connect to sync that way!" then in the same breath like three sentences lower on the page say "if you have an M1 MacBook, try using a USB to USB-C adapter!".

It makes no sense.

I've talked to Garmin support about this and they basically said (paraphrasing here) that I'm SOL atm. I like to think that's not the case. There has to be a solution out there somewhere, either a software update or something!

Let the discussing commence. What have you tried? Has anyone of you found a solution yet?

I am fortunate that I have an Intel Mac still that I can connect my Garmin to to update it for the time being. But also. I want to use it on my new MacBook Pro!

Considering that I can connect it to my Intel Mac (it's a MacBook Air) just fine, I'm honestly convinced it's Apple Silicon that's the problem/culprit here, but Silicon with Garmin specifically. I got a direct connection USB-C to Mini-USB cord to test with my Garmin Nüvi 50LM and naturally it didn't work, but I plugged it into my oldie-ish Sony camcorder and then to my M1 MacBook Pro to test the cord with another device that on any other machine would connect and show up like a hard drive (like Garmin does!) and shockingly, it worked. I also tried the Garmin cable with Apple's official adapter/dongle on the Camcorder vs. the Garmin Nüvi 50LM and again, shockingly...it worked.

Why does Silicon not like Garmin or not play well with Garmin?
