Time Machine Preparation OS Catalina 10.15.7

Hi, for other reasons I deleted my TM backups by erasing the 2tb disk and run "repair" in disk utility, then started a new TM backup of 450gb. The "preparing to backup" has taken more than 24hrs and is still in that process.

I know thats a lots of files, photos, music, etc, but is that a normal length of time to prepare backup?

Any info appreciated

Time Machine backup disk space This is on an iMac 2021 M1 using Ventura 13.6. It has a 1Tb drive of which typically ~100Gb is used. I needed to do some backing up of old files onto external SSDs and in the process I copied ~800Gb onto the iMac HD and then copied it back to a SSD and deleted from the iMac HD. And in the process Time Machine updates ticked over. After some to-ing and fro-ing I now have two files on the Time Machine backup SSD, one from yesterday of ~700Gb and one from today of ~100Gb. If I need to use the backup I would use the current file. Can I delete the older file to make sure there is sufficient space on the backup drive in case it is needed?

How long does first time machine backup take? I am trying to back up the hard drive of my late 2012 mac mini using an external hard drive set up as "time machine". The internal drive is a 1TB drive which has about 60 GB left on it, so it is very almost a 1TB back up I am attempting. The external drive is 4 TB partitioned with 2 TB for the time machine. I did not expect this to be quick but it has been in the "preparing back up" stage for about 18 hours. Is this a case of being patient or does this level of delay indicate that the time machine back has failed and I need to back up manually? Many thanks for any help

Backing up with a Time Machine Hi, I'm running Catalina 10.15.7 and I have a Time Machine which was bought about 10 years ago. For the past year or so it has failed to run backups. How do I get it backing up again? Do I need to buy an external drive?

Hi, thank you for your response.

I stopped the backup, erased the disk and ran "repair" again on disk utility then tried again. "prepare backup" ran for 4 hours and it's now backing up with est. 10 hours to run.

This can be normal, but if it will take up to 48 hours, cancel the backup and try again
