not enough space on macbook pro after factory reset

I am having trouble re-installing the operating system on my macbook pro. I erased the disk and performed essentially a "factory reset" as per all the instructions provided by the Apple Support guide. When I turn it back on and press command + R and try to reinstall it says there is not enough space.... It's a 250GB macbook pro and the operating system needs 50GB. I don't understand why there isn't enough space, It says of the 250GB there is only 48GB free despite the fact that erased the drive. Can anyone shed any light on how to fix this?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.1

Ok so when i go to disk utility view I get show all devices or show volumes, if I get show volumes the top option on the left is just Macintosh HD, if i click show all devices, this is what I see

Do I definitely select the top one and erase that? I'm worried i'll accidently select the wrong thing and Mac OS recovery thing won't exist anymore for me to re-install lol

Did you try to hit Erase after reaching this stage? What happens then?

Keep in mind, all 2012 and later Macs support internet recovery. This runs even if there is no recovery volume present on your system. They just need an ethernet connection to your modem. command-option-shift-R at startup

If the erase fails from internet recovery, then the drive itself is damaged.
